SPIRIT MOUNTAIN’S SPIRIT

Spirit Mountain is where most of our programs take place. It is a lush tropical garden directly adjacent to a massive jungle-covered limestone karst. The site hosts numerous caves, and is composed of large open areas punctuated with fruit trees and tropical vegetation. The garden forms an L-shape around the mountain exhibiting impressive walls with myriads of stalactites, tuffas and volumes, overlooking it. A trail continues almost all the way around the mountain providing an opportunity for a short hike and fosters a more intimate sense of what the place has to offer. The local community, including, expats, find in its place a precious local natural healing refuge.

Spirit Mountain is ideal for an immersive stay in nature, a relaxed moment, and to take the time to reflect, inspired by the unspoiled jungle lying up above and the people hanging around. The numerous outdoor activities that we propose here bring additional incentives for exploring new grounds and probing existing boundaries within yourself. These activities include wellness and self-development practices, outdoor adventures and environmental conservation projects (more info here). The common area, is the heart of spirit mountain and a place where people share, learn and laugh.

Spirit Mountain with its wild natural character is a healing place.

SUSTAINABILITY

While Spirit Mountain has been around as a climbing site for about eight years, the place is more recently transitioning towards a more integrated community-living site with intentions to show-case sustainable living solutions in practice providing a forum for learning and exchange. Accordingly, we are now trying to put terms such as circularity, community spirit, sustainable living, etc. into practice in a culturally sensitive way. Among other initiatives we will be working towards (most of it is planned for 2020/2021):

  • Setting up a Biogas digester to fuel our kitchen and reuse some organic material that will not go into our composting station (planned for 2021).
  • Using solar panels to power the site, taking advantage of the sun’s unlimited energy reserves (planned for 2021).
  • Designing certain areas as an experimental permaculture garden to grow our own vegetables so we all can eat fresh, pesticide free fruits and vegetables in addition to optimize water drainage and recuperation (starting 2020).
  • Optimizing our existing composting system for food waste recuperation and transformation into rich, fertile soil.
  • Providing recycling stations which weekly collection involves local community members who then bring these recyclables to the recycling factory to get paid.
  • Offering Eco-bricking solutions (https://www.ecobricks.org)
  • Drinking water stations so you can refill your water bottles. No plastic bottles are sold on site.
  • Offering a set of supplies in our bungalows that are, by design, gentle to the environment (e.g. natural locally made soap and shampoo bars) in addition to items that we would sold in our Earthshop (bamboo toothbrushes, toothpaste tabs, bamboo cotton swabs, shampoo bars, organic hemp bags, refillable bottles, homemade deodorant, locally grown organic coconut oil, bamboo straws and more) (starting 2021).
  • Setting up a solar heated shower system and a rain water collection system to be used in washrooms (experiment started in 2020, continuing…).

FOOD

We offer a selection of healthy mostly vegetarian options (see below) for breakfast and lunches. Healthy snacks will also be available when possible (energy balls and the like). For dinners guests can preorder during the day or plan to eat in town at one of the many restaurant Aonang offers (see transportation matters below), or cook onsite as we open our communal kitchen area in the evening.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

What makes spirit mountain what it is, is its relative isolation from the busy Aonang beach 6kms away (10min by motorbike/tuktuk/taxi). This relative isolation implies that guests plan to either rent a bicycle, motorbike, car or taxi to travel around on their own. We can help with arranging that and provide useful tips to get to the right spots without hassle.
